Isn’t that like God to beckon Jonah to the one place he doesn’t want to go (Nineveh) to call the Ninevites back to God? And when Jonah refuses, he winds up in the belly of a big fish. Isn’t that also like Jesus to call Simon, Andrew, James, and John, unlikely fishermen, and tell them to drop their nets and start fishing for people? Like Jonah and the disciples, we can think of a million excuses why we don’t want to share the good news with “those people,” why we don’t believe others can change, or why we don’t want to leave the familiar for the unknown. Missional disciples are willing to do whatever it takes, even have their lives turned upside down, to be witnesses of Jesus to all the ends of the earth, starting in their own backyard.
